It’s generally acknowledged that writing a dissertation is stressful. People think that this is because you have to write a lot of words in not a lot of time (for reference, my dissertation is expected to be in the vicinity of 50,000-60,000 words, but in other departments you have to write more). While the whole lots-of-words-writing thing is definitely stressful, I would argue that it is not NEARLY the most stressful part of the writing-up process.
